Sources: the official MCP Registry API (registry.modelcontextprotocol.io, public, latest version of each server), the punkpeye/awesome-mcp-servers list (MIT licensed; name, link, short description, section and marks are taken from it with attribution), and the reference servers in the modelcontextprotocol/servers repository. Entries found in both are merged by repository.
Refresh: the data is fetched once a day with a polite request rate and a custom user agent. If a source fails, the previous snapshot stays and the date above shows the last successful fetch.
Categories come from the awesome list sections where the entry is listed there. For registry-only entries the category is a keyword guess from the name and description, so treat it as a hint. Language comes from the list marks or the package type. Authentication shows only what the registry entry declares (secret environment variables or required headers); it does not prove how a server really works.
Not included: GitHub star counts (they need thousands of API calls and a key) and any security rating. Activity means the registry's own update date. A namespace check in the registry proves who controls the name, not that the code is safe.
Before you run an MCP server, read its code, check what it can reach, and give it the least access you can. A server runs with the rights you give it.
