AI Extensions: MCP TypeScript SDK 2.3.1, Python SDK 2.3.0 and mabl’s new MCP tools

Both official MCP SDKs shipped small releases that tighten auth and timeouts, and a test platform gave its MCP server write access to environments. Read the scopes before you connect.

Three updates from the last four days all come down to the same question: what is a connected agent allowed to do, and who checks the token? The two official MCP SDKs got releases that make auth and timeout behavior stricter. mabl’s MCP server got tools that can edit a test environment.

The short version

Official sources: modelcontextprotocol/typescript-sdk v2.3.1 (released October 5, 2026; 13,524 stars, 2,258 forks, 558 open issues on October 6), modelcontextprotocol/python-sdk v2.3.0 (released October 2; 24,497 stars, 4,013 forks, 357 open issues on October 6), and mabl’s October 5 help note. Stars show interest, not safety. I installed nothing.

MCP TypeScript SDK 2.3.1

  • Official: https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/typescript-sdk and release v2.3.1
  • License and upkeep: the repository’s LICENSE file says the project is moving from MIT to Apache-2.0, with some older contributions still under MIT. Last push October 5. GitHub’s license field reads “NOASSERTION”, which is what you get for a mixed notice like this, so check it for your own compliance needs.
  • What changed: requireBearerAuth in @modelcontextprotocol/server-legacy takes an optional expectedResource, already added to the main server package in 2.3.0. When you set it, the server accepts only tokens issued for it, by checking the token’s audience. It is off unless you turn it on. The client, server, core, legacy and codemod packages moved to 2.3.1; the Node, Express, Hono and Fastify adapters did not.
  • Setup:
    npm install --save-exact @modelcontextprotocol/server-legacy@2.3.1
    pip install -U mcp

Caveat: upgrading alone changes nothing. A legacy deployment stays as permissive as before until you set the option. The legacy package is deprecated, so treat this as a patch and keep the migration on your list.

MCP Python SDK 2.3.0

  • Official: https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/python-sdk, release v2.3.0 and the docs
  • License and upkeep: GitHub’s license field reads MIT. Released October 2, last push October 5.
  • What changed: mostly fixes plus three options. The notes list four behavior changes to read before upgrading: httpx2 2.10.0 or newer is required; a tool with an invalid x-mcp-header annotation now fails at registration instead of being silently dropped by newer clients; empty _meta and params are no longer sent on older connections; and interactive OAuth login no longer counts against request timeouts. New options include max_sse_event_size (default still 1 MiB per event) and MCPServer(subscriptions=False).

Caveat: the notes say a request timeout no longer ends a login that nobody finishes, so put your own limit inside callback_handler. A hung consent prompt is now your problem to bound.

mabl cloud MCP server: environments, members and artifacts

  • Official: mabl help, 2026/10/05
  • License and upkeep: a hosted vendor service, so there is no open-source license to report. The help page is dated October 5.
  • What changed: new tools to look up an environment and its variable names, set or remove variables, and rename it; list workspace members with name, email and role; and list test-run artifacts such as screenshots, DOM snapshots, HAR files, console logs and traces. Variable values are never returned. Changing an environment needs the editor or owner role.

Caveat: this is write access to the place your tests get their configuration, plus a member list with email addresses. HAR files and console logs can carry tokens from the app under test. Connect with the lowest role that does the job and treat artifacts as sensitive. The page’s sample prompts are the vendor’s examples, not something I tried.

Sources and limits

I read each page and pulled stars, forks, issues, license fields and release dates from GitHub on October 6, 2026. I installed and ran nothing. The caveats are my analysis.
