AI Extensions, November 2: AgentCompass makes the execution boundary explicit

A unified evaluation framework is useful only when the run record explains where commands executed, how attempts were counted and what the verifier measured.

A unified evaluation framework is useful only when the run record explains where commands executed, how attempts were counted and what the verifier measured.

An evaluation extension, not a leaderboard winner

AgentCompass separates Model, Benchmark, Harness and Environment so evaluation components can be combined without rebuilding the whole runner. The current README claims more than 30 public benchmarks and more than 10 harnesses. Its EMNLP paper abstract describes over 20 benchmarks and three core components. I treat these as differently dated descriptions, not an error to silently reconcile. This November 2 review follows the current repository and CLI documentation, without installing or executing the package.

Read the default before the quick start

The run reference lists host_process as the built-in environment default, before configuration overrides. The environment guide says host_process creates no sandbox: commands run on the host directly. Docker and remote providers are separate choices. A framework's support for isolated execution does not make every run isolated. Before an authorized trial, inspect the effective provider, image, mounts, network policy and task directory. A container label by itself does not prove protection from every escape or data disclosure.

Verification may happen somewhere else

The environment guide says the Benchmark determines where verification runs. It may run on the host, reuse the current environment or open a separate verification environment. Consequently, recording only the agent's execution backend leaves an important gap. The verifier may read artifacts, run code and access dependencies under different conditions. My proposed trial would use a harmless synthetic artifact and record the execution and verification locations separately, including resource and network limits. I have not checked those boundaries at runtime.

Attempts and retries are different units

The CLI documentation defines k as independent logical attempts and says it excludes retries created within an attempt by max-retries. The built-in retry default is zero; configuration can override it. With multiple attempts, avg plans all k and produces avg@k, while binary metrics also produce pass@k. The pass strategy applies only to binary correctness and stops after success or the attempt limit. A scalar score with pass is rejected before tasks start. These distinctions matter when comparing success rates, elapsed time and bills.

Resuming needs compatible evidence

The reuse option can reuse compatible completed details that need no retry under current policy, or checkpoints for unfinished tasks without complete details. That is more specific than a promise to resume anything. I would pin benchmark revision, harness, model endpoint, environment and grading settings, then inspect what the runner reused and what it reran. A resumed result should not quietly combine a new task definition with an old successful trace. The JSON below is a proposed audit record, not a validated AgentCompass configuration schema.

Version and license are separate checks

The README announces the first PyPI v1.0.0 release on September 30. Current main pyproject.toml declares version 1.1.0 and Python >=3.12. I did not verify a matching published package or release artifact, so I do not call 1.1.0 a newly released wheel. The actual LICENSE is Apache 2.0 for the framework. Benchmark datasets, model APIs, images and remote providers can have separate terms and charges. Source availability does not make a run free or authorize sending private tasks to an endpoint.

The smallest useful acceptance test

In an approved disposable environment, choose one known task and fix the model, benchmark and harness revisions. Run a baseline, an intentional harmless infrastructure failure and a controlled resume, then inspect logical attempts, physical executions, verification location and retained artifacts. Use synthetic inputs and keep credentials outside saved traces. This is a test plan, not a report of passing tests. AgentCompass may make comparisons easier to audit; the experiment still has to state exactly what was compared.
