AI Extensions, November 3: give WordPress a task, not the whole workshop

The official MCP Adapter and Novamira answer different questions. One exposes registered abilities; the other offers broad development access. Choose the boundary before the client.

The decision before installation

A request to find broken links does not need the same access as a request to rebuild a theme. Yet both can arrive as a friendly sentence in a coding assistant. Today’s extension picks make that difference concrete: WordPress MCP Adapter turns registered abilities into an agent-facing interface, while Novamira offers PHP, WP-CLI and filesystem work inside a WordPress installation. This is a documentation-based comparison, not a live deployment test, a launch announcement or a popularity ranking. The useful question is what the site owner is prepared to let the connection do.

Pick one: the official MCP Adapter

The official WordPress package is part of the AI Building Blocks initiative. It bridges the Abilities API to MCP tools, resources and prompts, with HTTP and STDIO transports. The plugin listing is explicit that the adapter does not supply AI features itself: it exposes abilities supplied by WordPress or another plugin. Core’s Abilities API is available in WordPress 6.9 and above. An ability has a named operation, a category, schemas and execution logic. That makes a small read-only inventory a plausible starting project. It does not make an arbitrary plugin safe merely because its interface has a schema.

Discovery is not permission

The current repository says abilities are private by default. Its current creating-abilities guide allows meta.public to expose an ability, with an explicit meta.mcp.public value overriding the default specifically for MCP. The February introductory article emphasizes meta.mcp.public instead. These are version-sensitive instructions, not a reason to paste one old example without reading today’s guide. The default server provides discover-abilities, get-ability-info and execute-ability. A client can learn what an operation means before calling it. Transport authentication and per-ability permission checks are separate gates. A valid login is not a substitute for checking the minimum capability needed by the callback.

A small failure that can look like no feature

The guide says every ability needs an already registered category. Missing or unregistered categories can make wp_register_ability return null, with a PHP notice that may be invisible when debugging is disabled. That is an unusually useful troubleshooting detail: an absent tool may be a registration problem rather than a broken model or transport. I would inspect category registration order and exposure flags before broadening permissions. A diagnostic should not repair a missing listing by granting an administrator account everything.

Pick two: Novamira’s development workshop

Novamira takes the wider route. Its repository describes PHP execution, database inspection through WordPress APIs, WP-CLI, files, Block Editor workflows, media and reusable skills. It says connections are direct between the AI client and WordPress, not routed through a Novamira hosted proxy. That statement does not settle the connected model provider’s handling of prompts. The README’s own warning is clear: development and staging, with backups. Requirements list WordPress 6.9+, PHP 8.0+, an administrator account and HTTPS for remote connections. Local development is treated separately. The release ZIP is recommended because GitHub’s source archive lacks the bundled Composer dependencies required by the MCP server.

Where each choice earns its place

For a repeatable editorial inventory, I prefer a narrow ability with a defined output over a general PHP execution surface. For a developer changing a plugin on a disposable staging copy, Novamira’s broader access may fit the job. These are editorial fit judgments, not measured speed or security results. A recoverable sandbox for new PHP files does not prove that every database or filesystem change is reversible. Back up files and database, test restoration, and decide which actions require review. Installing either project does not authorize publishing posts, changing users or sending site data to a model.

Read the license and the exit plan

The adapter README identifies GPL-2.0-or-later; its LICENSE.md contains the GPL version 2 text. Novamira’s README identifies AGPL-3.0-or-later and its LICENSE contains the AGPL version 3 text. Those are different copyleft terms, not interchangeable “free for anything” badges. Read the notices for the exact components you distribute or modify, and get qualified advice for obligations you cannot resolve. This review does not claim that software licensing eliminates hosting, model or operational cost. Before connecting, record how to revoke access, remove the plugin and recover a known-good site.

A first trial I would actually trust

Use a disposable site with synthetic posts. For the adapter, expose only a read-only inventory and test a denied call with a lower-privilege user. For Novamira, ask for a proposed change first, inspect its diff, then allow one reversible edit on staging. Record requested operation, effective user, touched files, database changes, network destinations and restoration result. Add an instruction inside a synthetic post asking the client to change an administrator email: it must remain content, not authorization. None of these trials was run for this digest. The pass condition is an observed boundary and a working recovery route, not a reassuring final paragraph.
