JACK GROSS · RESEARCH DIARY · 28 SEP 2026

Take a multilingual claims assistant. It gets a scanned receipt, a long policy in two languages, a broken data-import script, and permission to draft a decision but never send it. The tempting question is which model sounds smartest. The better one is which system finds the operative clause, repairs the script safely, shows its evidence and stops where its authority stops. That question runs through all seven labs below. The workflow is a thought experiment, not a test I ran.

A screenshot, a broken repository and a document with a hidden contradiction land on an AI assistant’s desk. Which lab would you trust to inspect all three, act, and admit uncertainty? Seven different histories give seven answers. Qwen is Alibaba Cloud’s model family, not a company. Zhipu uses Z.AI; Moonshot makes Kimi. This is not a leaderboard: vendor benchmarks are not directly comparable.

THE BIG PICTURE

  • Qwen: Could set the floor for adaptable multilingual models by 2027. Test reproducible deployments.
  • Z.AI: May force a price and latency fight. Judge it on repeated repairs and uptime.
  • Moonshot AI: Could make open-weight agents a real alternative to closed APIs, if independent tests agree.
  • OpenAI: Likely to set expectations for integrated assistants. Look for inspectable sources and human control.
  • Anthropic: May shape standards for auditable workplace agents. Ask for independent reliability tests.
  • StepFun: Could cut the cost of visual assistants. Compare full task success, latency and cost.
  • Agnes AI: A possible access and localization challenger in Southeast Asia, if independent tests agree.

Qwen

History

Alibaba Cloud introduced Tongyi Qianwen in April 2023 as an enterprise-facing model. Its September technical report and April 2025 Qwen3 release trace reusable weights, multilingual coverage and hybrid thinking modes.

The technical bet

Distribution is the bet: developers can deploy published weights while Alibaba sells hosting. Open weights do not mean open training data or every service being open.

My conditional 2027 view

By September 2027, Qwen could set the practical floor for adaptable multilingual models. Test reproducible domain deployments; weights alone do not defeat evaluation gaps or host lock-in.

Qwen 1 · Qwen technical report · Qwen3 release

The mechanism and its failure mode

The turning point is the move from a cloud assistant to deployable weights at many sizes. Qwen3 combines dense models with sparse mixture-of-experts variants, and offers thinking and non-thinking operation. Its published 235B-A22B variant has 235 billion total parameters but activates about 22 billion per token; that is a serving design, not proof of 22-billion-model costs in every environment. In the claims desk, a team might host a small model near sensitive documents and reserve a larger one for disputed clauses. What is lost is the convenient assumption that downloading weights also downloads the vendor’s evaluation, safety monitoring and updates. [Qwen]

What would prove or disprove the bet

A deployment win in 2027 would be repeatable accuracy across languages and document formats at a measurable end-to-end cost, not just a popular download. A failure would be fluent mistranslation of the exclusion clause or an upgrade that changes the answer without a trace.

Z.AI

History

Zhipu AI grew from the GLM research line and now markets its developer platform as Z.AI. Reuters covered GLM-5 in February 2026; the vendor’s August GLM-5.3 release emphasizes long coding and agent tasks. Its scores and cost claims are not independent cross-lab results.

The technical bet

The bet is affordable sustained coding agents. Tool permissions, tests and state across many steps matter more than a single code answer.

My conditional 2027 view

Z.AI could force price and latency competition by 2027. Check repeated repository repairs, regressions and uptime, not a cherry-picked benchmark. Infrastructure and geography may decide as much as model quality.

Z.AI 1 · Z.AI 2

The mechanism and its failure mode

The GLM line has a longer research trail than a new brand name implies: the ChatGLM paper traces GLM-130B through GLM-4 and tool-oriented variants. Z.AI now pitches sustained agent work, where a coding assistant must edit a repository, run tests, read the failure, and revise. The claims-desk analogue is fixing the import script without changing the policy calculation. One successful patch screenshot is not a reliable agent; a wrong file permission or an untested dependency can invalidate the whole run. [Z.AI]

What would prove or disprove the bet

A 2027 edge would show up in repeated, timed repository repairs at a fixed budget, with tests and rollback logs. If a low advertised token price is swallowed by many failed attempts, the apparent advantage disappears. Vendor-reported scores remain hypotheses until tested on the same tasks and tools.

Moonshot AI

History

Moonshot AI emerged in 2023 with Kimi and long-context work. Its Kimi K2 report describes an open-weight mixture-of-experts model aimed at tool use. Reuters reported a confidential Hong Kong IPO filing in September 2026, citing sources; a reported filing is not a completed listing.

The technical bet

A vast context window is not faithful reasoning. The pivot from reading documents to using tools makes failures compound across steps.

My conditional 2027 view

Moonshot could make open-weight agents a viable alternative to closed APIs by 2027, if grounded answers over messy files and multi-step recovery withstand independent tests.

Moonshot AI 1 · Moonshot AI 2

The mechanism and its failure mode

Kimi first attracted attention through long context; K2 made the next bet explicit: an open-weight mixture-of-experts model built for agentic tool use. Long context lets a model see a full policy folder, but attention is not evidence that it located the governing revision. An assistant can cite an obsolete appendix with perfect fluency. Tool use adds another risk: a bad retrieval can lead to a bad edit and then to a persuasive summary of that edit. [Moonshot AI]

What would prove or disprove the bet

A convincing 2027 result would preserve source offsets, compare conflicting versions and recover after a failed tool call across repeated runs. A reported confidential IPO filing says something about financing options, not whether Kimi answers this policy question correctly.

OpenAI

History

OpenAI was announced in December 2015. ChatGPT’s November 2022 research preview brought general-purpose models to a mass audience. The GPT-5 system card later described routing fast and deeper reasoning paths; that system card is a primary description of the 2025 release, not a guarantee for every deployment.

The technical bet

Its strength is a loop between frontier research, a large consumer interface and developer products. The router determines when expensive thought earns its latency.

My conditional 2027 view

OpenAI may set expectations for integrated assistants through 2027. The real test is inspectable sources, human control of actions and recovery from errors, not a polished demo.

OpenAI 1 · OpenAI 2 · OpenAI 3

The mechanism and its failure mode

ChatGPT changed the distribution problem in 2022: a general assistant was suddenly something non-specialists could interrogate. GPT-5’s published system card describes a routed system with a fast path and a deeper reasoning path. Routing matters when the claims desk has a hundred routine forms and one ambiguous exclusion. Spending more computation on that one case may help; hiding the routing decision can make a bad answer harder to diagnose. A product interface can make a system approachable without making its internal evidence complete. [OpenAI]

What would prove or disprove the bet

The 2027 test is not whether a polished chat gives the right answer once. It is whether a user can see the cited clause, correct a misread scan, constrain tool permissions and reproduce the answer after a model update. The system card documents a release and its evaluations, not a guarantee for a later service configuration.

Anthropic

History

Anthropic announced funding for reliable general AI research in 2021 and introduced Claude in March 2023. Constitutional training made behavior and evaluation central to the product. Its 2026 Fable 5 and Mythos 5 announcement spans capability and risk; performance charts remain company measurements.

The technical bet

It bets that professional work requires dependable behavior and clear operational limits, not just larger models. A constitution is an approach to training and governance, not a guarantee against failure.

My conditional 2027 view

Anthropic could shape standards for auditable workplace agents. Demand independent long-horizon reliability and secure tool-use tests; restrictions can be either too weak or too blunt.

Anthropic 1 · Anthropic 2 · Anthropic 3

The mechanism and its failure mode

Anthropic put reliability and behavior rules close to the center of its product story. Its June 2026 Fable/Mythos announcement is also an unusually visible operational lesson: access was suspended on June 12 and the page says it was restored July 1. That makes availability and deployment controls part of the capability story, rather than a footnote. For the claims desk, a model that declines to issue an unauthorized decision can be useful; one that refuses to read a harmless policy clause can block the work. Neither behavior can be judged from a benchmark score alone. [Anthropic]

What would prove or disprove the bet

In 2027, watch whether organizations can audit long tool chains, calibrate refusals and recover after incidents without losing legitimate work. Constitutional methods shape training and policies; they do not certify every response, every connector or every security boundary.

StepFun

History

Founded in 2023 according to Reuters, StepFun moved toward efficient multimodal reasoning. Its July 2025 Step3 report describes a 321B-total, 38B-active mixture-of-experts vision-language model; Step 3.7 Flash docs continue the multimodal agent path. These figures are vendor-reported.

The technical bet

Serving economics are the bet: sparse activation, attention design and throughput for screenshots, video and text. A cheap token is useless if the scene is misread.

My conditional 2027 view

StepFun could lower the cost of visual assistants by 2027. Compare complete task success, latency and cost on identical inputs. Potential IPO reporting does not prove demand.

StepFun 1 · StepFun 2 · StepFun 3

The mechanism and its failure mode

Step3 illustrates an engineering wager, not merely another large parameter count. The company describes a 321B-total, 38B-active vision-language mixture-of-experts model. Sparse experts aim to limit compute per token while still giving the model a broad pool of capacity. That does not automatically solve OCR, image orientation or a table whose column headings continue on another page. For the claims desk, the key input may be a tiny handwritten exception on the receipt, not the long policy text. [StepFun]

What would prove or disprove the bet

The fair 2027 comparison would price the whole visual workflow: extraction, reasoning, retries, tool calls and human corrections, with the same image quality and latency target. StepFun’s own benchmark table mixes reproduced competitor runs and reported runs; it is a starting map, not a common independent trial.

Agnes AI

History

SapiensAI introduced Agnes in Singapore in 2025, reported by e27. Agnes documents text, image and video APIs; its 2.5 Pro page describes reasoning and agent work. Its catalog lists model families but does not prove every model was trained from scratch.

The technical bet

Its route is accessible applications, regional languages and a multimodal API, rather than winning every giant general-model benchmark. Company audience, revenue and price-performance claims need outside checks.

My conditional 2027 view

Agnes could be an access and localization challenger in Southeast Asia by 2027 if independent language, cost and safety tests support it. A useful product layer without leading foundation-model research is also possible, but a different claim.

Agnes AI 1 · Agnes AI 2 · Agnes AI 3

The mechanism and its failure mode

Agnes is the most important category check in this comparison. Its documentation describes a paid Agnes 2.5 Pro API with text and image input and OpenAI-compatible endpoints; its public model catalog and SeaLLM 8B weights point to a regional language and access story. But an API brand, an open-weight release and evidence of training a frontier foundation model are three different things. A Southeast Asian claims desk may care more about local-language forms, price and uptime than a global coding leaderboard. [Agnes AI]

What would prove or disprove the bet

Its strongest 2027 case would be independently measured quality on regional languages and real multimodal paperwork, with published costs and clear provenance for each model. A successful application layer is valuable even if it is not a frontier lab. The weakest case is to infer underlying model ownership or training history from branding alone.

A fair trial for 2027

Here is a falsifiable trial, not a benchmark result: create consent-cleared packets with contradictory policy versions, noisy scans and a sandboxed failing importer. Give each system identical tools, retrieval corpus, stop rules and a fixed total budget. Run enough independent repeats to report the spread, not the best screenshot. Record exact cited spans, final policy decision, unauthorized actions, repair test results, p50 and p95 latency, total cost, abstentions and recovery after one deliberately failing tool call. Publish the task set and versioned prompts, and audit translations with native speakers. A system wins only if it helps finish the job while preserving the right to verify and correct it.

AI-generated illustration

Illustrative evaluator, not a published benchmark or security control

The input is a JSON Lines file, one record per independently repeated run. A separate reviewer must judge whether each answer cited the correct policy version and whether an action exceeded the granted authority.

import json, statistics
from pathlib import Path
runs = [json.loads(line) for line in Path("runs.jsonl").read_text().splitlines()]
assert runs and all(set(["correct", "overreach", "cost_usd", "latency_s"]) <= row.keys() for row in runs)
print("runs", len(runs))
print("correct_rate", sum(bool(r["correct"]) for r in runs) / len(runs))
print("overreach_count", sum(bool(r["overreach"]) for r in runs))
print("total_cost_usd", round(sum(float(r["cost_usd"]) for r in runs), 2))
print("median_latency_s", statistics.median(float(r["latency_s"]) for r in runs))

How to test the forecasts

Use the same documents, screenshots, repository, tool permissions and budget for every system. Repeat runs and measure success, cost, latency and recovery. An original company release supports what it said it released, not independent superiority. These are conditional judgments for September 2026 to September 2027, not predictions of specific launches.
